[2010-03-15] Tax Offices to close later on Tax Day

The Tax Administration has announced that it will close one hour later on Monday, March 15 at fourteen Tax Offices in preparation for the usual large number of persons expected to file their income tax returns on the due date. As a result of the extended opening, the following Tax Offices will close at 5:00 pm:

  • Kingston
  • Constant Spring
  • Cross Roads
  • Mandeville
  • May Pen
  • Spanish Town
  • Portmore
  • Montego Bay
  • Savanna-La-Mar
  • Morant Bay
  • Brown’s Town
  • St. Ann’s Bay
  • Falmouth
  • Lucea
All other offices will operate their usual hours.

Other measures to accommodate the large number of persons expected to file their returns on “tax day” have also been put in place. Extra staff will be available in the service areas of all tax offices to manage the flow and movement of the lines, ensure that forms are properly completed, to direct taxpayers to the correct areas and to process transactions. At the tax office located in Cross Roads, a tent has been erected outside to accomodate the anticipated crowd. Also in Kingston, at the Constant Spring and King Street tax offices other crowd management measures have been implemented. Persons filing a “nil” return will be directed to special lines or to use the electronic drop boxes available.  Despite the special measures put in place, persons are advised that they may experience delays due to the expected crowds.

Taxpayers are further advised that the March 15 deadline for business persons to file income tax returns will not be extended. This means that all companies, self-employed persons, partnerships, organisations and employed persons who have additional income must file their Annual Income Tax Return for 2009 and their Declaration of Estimated Income & Tax Payable for 2010 and pay the tax due, by Monday, March 15.

Returns filed after Monday, March 15 will be considered late and may attract a penalty or sanctions being brought against the taxpayer. Additionally, where no return is filed, a failure to file notice may be issued and/or an estimated return automatically generated by the administration’s computerised system or other enforcement action taken.
