Tax Administration Jamaica (TAJ) wishes to remind business persons that GCT Returns for December become due on Wednesday January 31, 2018. Large and Medium taxpayers are also reminded that they must file their returns online using the TAJ portal at www.jamaicatax.gov.jm, as e-Filing for these categories of taxpayer is mandatory.
Small and micro business persons registered to collect GCT are however being encouraged to e-File their Returns, as TAJ is moving to implement the final phase of its mandatory requirement of the online filing of all GCT Returns beginning April 1, 2018. This new procedural change will require small (lower and upper) and micro taxpayers, classified by annual total supplies/turnover of $150M and below, to file their monthly GCT returns online.
Recent statistics indicate that the e-Filing rate for small and micro businesses has increased significantly, with a current rate of over 70%, moving from just under 44% in November 2017. This coincides with the recent roll out of the TAJ programme to sensitise businesses to the new mandatory online filing requirement and suggests a downward trend of inline filing at Tax Offices, as more business persons opt to utilize the convenience, security and speed of the tax authority’s eServices platform.
To assist small and micro businesses to transition to filing GCT returns online, TAJ is providing training support to persons identified in this phase of the mandatory e-filing requirement. Taxpayers can therefore, make arrangements for eOne-on-One sessions to train their staff or request an Advisory Visit at their business location to get assistance on the procedure to e-file returns.
GCT returns filed and payments made after the last working day of the month, whether online or inline, will be considered late and the necessary penalties and interest charges applied.
