TAJ Maintains Upward Collections Trend at end of Third Quarter

Tax Administration Jamaica (TAJ) is advising that preliminary figures indicate that for the month of December the net collections were $26.6B or 27.3% above the $20.9B target. The year-to-date net collections now stand at $191.9B which is $12.6B or 7% above the $179.2B projected target.

This performance continues the positive trend which was set over the previous two quarters and during the financial year 2015/2016.

TAJ is attributing this positive outcome to the continuation of focused compliance strategies, which includes closer monitoring of arrears which was facilitated through the implementation of the Revenue Administration Information System (RAiS); the mandating of several categories of taxpayers to file online and the introduction and the application of a system generated penalty of $5,000 per month per return for late filing.

Additionally, the service and education push continued as Taxpayer Education Teams, Technical Specialists, Client Relationship Managers and Customer Care Agents interfaced with taxpayers to educate and inform them of their rights and obligations and well as provide tax information and assistance. Seminars, workshops, sensitization sessions and speaking engagements were some of the strategies employed.

TAJ Deputy Commissioner General Dave Jeffery said “we are encouraged as our efforts are bearing fruit. We know that there is still more  work to do and we will continue to utilise all the avenues available to encourage and foster voluntary compliance”. He went on to say however, that “we have implemented several audit and registration programmes which were developed using automated risk models as well as third party data and from which we expect to earn approximately J$4B and J$1.2B respectively.” He cautioned that “tax evaders will be aggressively pursued through intelligence and enforcement actions and brought to book”.

Persons may contact the TAJ Customer Care Centre at 1-888-Tax-Help (1-888-829-4357) toll-free for further information or assistance.
