TAJ Extends Date for Filing GCT Returns for June 2014 to August 15, 2014
With the recent introduction of GCT on government purchases some suppliers and government entities have been experiencing challenges in fully implementing the new policy and have expressed the need for additional time to work through the changes. Acting Commissioner General, TAJ, Ainsley Powell has advised that “during this period the TAJ will be providing additional support to ministries, department and agencies (MDAs), as well as to registered taxpayers to assist them to better understand how to implement the changes”.
Under the new policy, MDAs are required to withhold GCT charged on purchases, provide suppliers with a WTC and pay the amounts over to the tax authority. The suppliers will use WTCs issued to them to claim a credit when filing GCT returns, which must be filed online.
The MDA must first upload the data captured on the WTC to TAJ’s system. This will allow the data relating to the WTCs received to be automatically listed on the GCT return being filed by taxpayers, Suppliers are reminded that withholding tax certificates that have not been used for any month may be used in subsequent periods.
