TAJ rolls out STEP programme with the start of the new school year!

Tax Administration Jamaica (TAJ) has resumed its School’s Tax Education Programme (STEP) as students begin to get settled with the start of the school year. The outreach programme which runs from September to March each year, aims to build an awareness of taxes and engender a positive tax culture among our nation’s youth.

The STEP specifically targets students at the primary, high and tertiary levels. It serves to introduce students to relevant tax issues, such as Jamaica Tax System, Paying Taxes, Starting a Business, TRN and Tax types including GCT, Income Tax, Property Taxes and Payroll taxes. Taxation matters explored are usually led by a team of Taxpayer Education Officers, who visits the schools and engage students and teachers in a two hour informative and interactive session free of cost.

Additionally, Schools Administrators, teachers or students who would like to take advantage of the programme can log on to our website at www.jamaicatax.gov.jm and download the STEP Visit Request Form and submit same by fax or email as an attachment.

The STEP, which was first introduced in high schools several years ago, has been expanded over the years to include students at the tertiary level, including vocational training schools.

During the 2013-14 fiscal year, over 100 schools across the island were visited. The team also participated in career days and the annual Junior Achievers Conference for high schools.

This year the STEP will be redoubling its efforts through the work of the Taxpayer Education teams to impart tax knowledge and leave a positive impact on our nation youths.

Persons wishing to arrange a visit or for further information on the STEP ,may contact the Tax Administration’s Customer Care Centre at 1-888-Tax-Help (1-888-829-4357) toll-free or visit our website www.jamaicatax.gov.jm.
