With one week until the March 15 deadline to file Annual Income Tax Returns, Tax Administration Jamaica is ramping up its support for business and self-employed individuals through its increased capacity with its eService option. Income Tax Filers and Tax Preparers can avail themselves of TAJ’s eServices and electronic initiatives to file their final Income Return for 2017 and Estimated Return for 2018 online.
Taxpayers can avoid the usual rush associated with “Tax Day” by opting to file and pay using the Revenue Administration Information System (RAiS). Persons simply need to register through the RAiS platform, TAJ’s Customer Care Centre at 1-888-829-4357 or visit any Tax Office. The service is secure, fast, user-friendly and convenient.
Statistics since December 2017 have shown a steady increase in Income Tax online filing from 24% to 36%. This underscores the ease of use, convenience and security of the online platform, which is evidenced by the increased subscription with an eFiling rate in all tax types of over 63% for the month February.
Several Tax Offices have been outfitted with an e-Tax Spot, a dedicated area which allows taxpayers to file online with support of tax personnel, these offices include: Cross Roads, Kingston, Montego Bay, and Mandeville Tax Offices. The Constant Spring Revenue Service Centre, Spanish Town and St. Ann’s Bay locations provide even greater support this tax season through their eFiling centres, where up to six (6) taxpayers can file at a time with the support of TAJ staff.
It is important for large taxpayers to note that they are required to complete the Schedule 8, declaring their transactions with connected persons, during the last year. The Schedule is to be filed along with the Income Tax Return due on March 15.
Companies, Partnerships, Other Bodies, Self-employed Individuals, persons with multiple employment and employed persons with other sources of income are advised to ensure that they use the correct form related to their type of business/activity, for the corresponding tax year to ensure that the Returns are filed accurately.
For persons filing manually Tax Administration Jamaica is advising that the Income Tax forms, which have been revised to reflect legislative changes and feedback from clients, are now available at www.jamaicatax.gov.jm.
Business persons and self-employed individuals are reminded of TAJ’s Special Taxpayer Assistance Programme (STAP) is now on island wide. Taxpayers wishing to avail themselves of these free sessions are asked to take their business documents, such as Taxpayer Registration Number (TRN), bank statements, purchase invoices, expense receipts, sales records, utility bills and any other records that can be used to verify their income and expenses when attending the sessions, to get the assistance of TAJ personnel to file their Returns and get registered to file online. A schedule of the STAP sessions is available at www.jamaicatax.gov.jm for their convenience.
Asset Tax Returns for 2018 will also become due and companies are reminded that this is to be filed on or before March 15.
Information support is available in the March 15 Income Tax Hub at www.jamaicatax.gov.jm, where persons will be able access literature, updated forms and other information relating to Income Tax filing.
