Tax Day the eWay

With hundreds of small business persons and self-employed individuals expected to file their final Income Tax Return for 2016 and Estimated Return for 2017 due on March 15, Tax Administration Jamaica (TAJ) has implemented a number of e-initiatives to provide support to help taxpayers file online.

Those conducting business during the Tax Season will be able to access TAJ’s online services to file and pay. Persons simply need to apply for an e-Services Registration, which may be done online or through the Customer Care Centre at 1-888-829-4357, to use the Revenue Administration Information System (RAiS). The service is fast, secure and convenient and allows taxpayers to avoid the usual tax office rush associated with the filing period.

To facilitate the online filing process, persons are advised that the S04, S04a and IT05 forms and applicable schedules to be used by self-employed persons and individuals, are now available for filing online. The forms have been revised to reflect recent legislative changes and to capture Income Tax and contributions information more easily.

Companies, Partnerships, Other Bodies, self-employed Individuals, persons with multiple employment and employed persons with other sources of income are advised to use the correct form related to their type of business or activity, for the corresponding tax year, to ensure that the Returns are filed accurately.

It is also important for large taxpayers to note that they are required to complete the Schedule 8, declaring their transactions with connected persons during the last year.

The Schedule is to be filed along with the Income Tax Return due on March 15. Large taxpayers are reminded that they are mandated to file their income tax returns online.

As TAJ moves to encourage more persons to file online, several tax offices have been outfitted with an e-Tax Spot, which is a dedicated area that allows taxpayers to file online with the support of TAJ personnel. E-Tax Spots are now available at the Cross Roads, St. Ann’s Bay, May Pen and Spanish Town Tax Offices, as well as at the Kingston, Montego Bay and Mandeville Revenue Service Centres. This initiative has expanded TAJ’s e-Filing facilities, which was previously only available at the e-Filing Centre, located at the Constant Spring Revenue Service Centre. As a result customers will have even greater support this tax season through these e-filing options, with support of TAJ staff.

Additionally, as part of the promotion of online filing, several small business associations are being engaged to provide tax support to their membership ahead of the March deadline. A focus of these sessions is a Tax Spot to provide a portable service window for information, live demonstrations of RAiS, consultancies and registration services for business persons to use RAiS.

Special Taxpayer Assistance Programmes are also being held island wide. Business persons and self-employed individuals can make use of these special tax support sessions, by taking along their income and expenditure statements, where TAJ personnel will help them to file their returns. A schedule of the Special Taxpayer Assistance Programme activities is available at www.jamaicatax.gov.jm for their convenience.

TAJ will also use the opportunity to guide persons at these tax support sessions on the use of the revised forms which reflect recent legislative changes, as well as changes to the personal Income Tax Threshold.

Asset Tax Returns for 2016 will also become due this tax season and companies are reminded that this is to be filed on or before March 15 and may be filed online.

Information support is available in the March 15 Income Tax Hub at www.jamaicatax.gov.jm, where persons will be able to access literature, updated forms and other information relating to Income Tax Filing.
