Tax Administration Jamaica (TAJ) is reporting that almost all business persons are filing GCT Returns online, which is a direct result of the full implementation of the mandatory eFiling requirement for all GCT registered Taxpayers. The Tax Authority recently implemented the final phase of its mandatory online GCT requirement with the inclusion of the Micro and Small GCT taxpayer category
in April 2018.
Since the implementation of the mandatory online requirement the number of Returns filed in Tax Offices has decreased significantly, with 5,347 Returns being filed inline in November 2017 moving to just under 205 returns being filed in June 2018. TAJ attributes this significant shift to the comprehensive taxpayer education and support programmes conducted during the period November 2017 to April 2018.
Small and Micro business persons were specifically targeted for special support during the period, as only approximately 30% of business persons in this taxpayer category were already filing via Tax Administration's online tax portal.
Statistics across the four main Tax Offices (Kingston, St. Andrew, Mandeville and Montego Bay) as well has the Large Taxpayer Office indicate that filing rates stand between 92% and 100%. Additionally, all categories of GCT Taxpayer have shown a significant increase in June 2017 filing rates for the comparative period of June 2018 moving from a low of 26% to 95% for the
Business persons are reminded that they can still get support to file GCT returns online, as the Tax Authority continues to provide training support assisting taxpayers to meet the online filing requirement. Taxpayers can therefore, make arrangements for eOne-on-One sessions to train their staff or request an Advisory Visit at their business location to get assistance on the procedure to efile returns. eFiling facilities are also available at several Tax Offices to accommodate taxpayers filing GCT and other Tax Returns online, with assistance from TAJ staff.
With the success of online filing of GCT returns, TAJ will next focus on introducing mandatory eFiling of Asset Tax and Corporate Income Tax returns.
