Caribbean Organisation of Tax Administrators (COTA) launches fifth Essay Competition

The Caribbean Organization of Tax Administrators (COTA) launched its Fifth Regional Essay Competition targeting high school students across the Caribbean ages 14 -15 years, under the topic “If I were the Head of my country’s Tax Administration, what I would do to increase tax revenues to fund the Government’s development programmes”. The 2017 essay competition is intended to encourage students to become familiar with the work of their country’s tax administration, to comment on the topical issues of tax evasion and tax avoidance and at the same time, allow Tax Administrators to benefit from the views of potential taxpayers.

Tax Administration Jamaica will lead the local leg of the competition and the top three local essays will be submitted to the regional competition. Prizes will be awarded to the top three (3) students and their schools at the regional level. Students across the Caribbean will be vying for the top prize of US$1000.00 and a trophy. The 2nd and 3rd place winners will win US$700.00 and $500.00 respectively. Local prizes will be awarded to the top three national winners and the essay deadline is May15, 2017. Application forms are available online at www.jamaicatax.gov.jm

Since 2004, the first staging of the COTA essay competition, Jamaica has consistently placed among the top three winners at the regional level. In 2004, Jamaica’s Shaneek Frank from William Knibb High School was awarded first 1st place at the regional level and Justin-Timothy Frater, student from Cornwall College awarded 2nd place at the previous staging held in 2014. With Jamaica’s successful track record at the regional level, students are encouraged to enter the competition and to meet the May 15, 2017 deadline.

The essay competition is a major element of COTA’s public education strategy, which is aimed at stimulating broad interest in regional tax related matters. In particular, the competition is aimed at encouraging youths ages 14 to 15 years to become knowledgeable and more aware about the function of Tax Administrations, and as potential taxpayers and decision-makers in the private and public spheres, as well as to engender an interest in this field as a career choice.
