Tax Administration Jamaica (TAJ) will this month engage several categories of taxpayers through a series of events scheduled for Kingston and St. Andrew. The ‘November Agenda’ kicked off on November 7 & 8, when the TAJ Team participated at the Jamaica Computer Society’s (JCS) Annual Knowledge Forum which was held at the University of the West Indies Regional Headquarters.
In addition to mounting a ‘Tax Spot’ which facilitated one-on-one technical consultations, TAJ also made a presentation on “The Tech-Volution of Tax Administration in Jamaica”. The presentation focussed on TAJ’s new Revenue Administration Information System (RAiS) and how this eService platform has revolutionised revenue administration in Jamaica. Since the full implementation of the system last year, the Tax Authority has seen significant improvements in compliance rates through the ease in doing business online.
The next stakeholder engagement will be at the Incorporated Masterbuilders of Jamaica Annual Seminar on Tuesday November 20, 2018 at the Jamaica Conference Centre. Under the theme “Construction: Tendering & implementation” members of TAJ’s Taxpayer Education Unit will seek to inform, educate and assist industry practitioners on tax matters which directly impact this taxpayer segment. This longstanding partnership has proven beneficial to TAJ and provides an opportunity to interface with a wide-cross section of industry players in one forum as it is usually well attended.
The month’s schedule of major activities will close with TAJ’s participation at the Young Entrepreneurs Association’s (YEA) Expo scheduled for the Jamaica Pegasus hotel on November 21, 2018. The Expo, an annual event, forms part of the activities in observance of National Entrepreneurship Week. The YEA is an affiliate of the Jamaica Employers Federation (JEF) and targets business owners 45 years of age and under. The TAJ and YEA alliance has borne fruit, as over the years, several association members have been able to access technical guidance as it relates their respective businesses and ensure their tax compliant status.
The ramping up of TAJ’s stakeholder engagements and outreach activities is in keeping with the organisation’s thrust to take tax ‘out of the office’. TAJ has been participating in more traditional and non-traditional events and engaging all categories of taxpayers in an effort to equip the public with up-to-date and accurate information.
